"Since 1950, we Americans have used up more resources than everyone who ever lived on the earth before then. America's 102 million households currently contain and consume more stuff than all other households throughout history, put together. Behind closed doors, we churn through manufactured goods and piped-in entertainment as if life were a stuff-eating contest. Despite of tangible evidence of indigestion, we keep consuming, partly because we've been convinced that it is normal."
