At a meeting in Poland concerning small farmers and the EU, a lady from Portugal stated rather quietly that since her country had joined the European Union 60% of small farmers had already left the land.  She then added:  "The European Union is simply not interested in small farms"  A month or so later I gave some vivid examples of what had happened in the UK over the past 2 decades,  the ripping up of 35,000 miles of hedgerows; the loss of 30% of native farmland bird species; 98% of species-rich hay meadows, thousands of tons of wind and water eroded topsoil and the loss from the land of around 15 thousand farmers every year, accompanied by a rapid decline in the quality of food.
