Global wind growth

An estimated 8,210 megawatts of wind energy capacity was added globally in 2004, bringing the total to approximately 47,760 megawatts--enough to provide power to more 22 million average homes in Europe.  Since 2001, global wind capacity has nearly doubled.  Wind is the world's fastest-growing energy source after solar power, driven by falling costs, concerns about climate change, and strong government policies.
